UNION LEADERS AND IMMIGRANTS STRUGGLE IN THE USA 2010

That day we stood together with New York Civil Liberties Union, the New Sanctuary Coalition – NYC, the New York Immigration Coalition, Families for Freedom and the May 1st Coalition for Worker and Immigrant Rights, and the Bail Out the People Movement. It was a beautiful display of solidarity with the human beings that make up a great majority of New York City’s population. But the people who came on your generously subsidized buses, came to Washington for one reason. They want, they need, just and humane immigration reform: legalization for all, opposing deportations, opposing the imprisonment of tens of thousands of innocent immigrants, and the unity of families, and opposing the huge industries that are profiting from the victimization of millions of undocumented people, NOT the Schumer-Graham Bill, promoted by many Democratic speakers on March 21st over huge jumbotrons, and espoused by no less than President Barack Obama, that was touted as “comprehensive immigration reform.” PUFF has always called for immigration legislation that does not create two kinds of human beings in one country, for we believe no human being is illegal. Schumer-Graham is travesty of “just” reform. If it passes, undocumented and even the documented will be fined and marginalized and hunted down like prey. And anti-immigrant racism and xenophobia will be legitimized. We have marched from Union Square where we stood against the deportation and imprisonment of immigrants. We have demanded, with the other members of the May 1 Coalition, legalization and civil equality; we have demanded justice for all workers in the USA. Every year we have gathered at Union Square. In 2005 we gathered in the hundreds, with African Americans and immigrants, and progressive white workers for worker rights. In 2006, over a million people marched from Union Square demanding rights for immigrants and all workers. In 2007, 2008 (Bush Era) and 2009 (Obama Government), despite growing threats from ICE (Immigration Custom Enforcement) who feel no remorse for tearing apart innocent families in midnight raids, we marched in the tens of thousands from Union Square, with the same demands: Legalization for all! An end to the raids! No Deportation! Equal rights for all workers! An end to splitting apart families! An end to spending billion$$ on militarization of the border and illegal wars. PUFF stands for unity of all workers. Labor Unions are supposed to be the standard bearers of this principle. But we have been troubled to learn that some organizations have decided to divide the working classes of the city and to organize a separate May Day rally. Pakistan USA Freedom Forum calls union leadership and NGOs at this moment of economic and social crisis to use their money and power to unite the immigrant struggle for those documented and undocumented in New York and the United States of America, and not to dilute the struggle of the immigrants and workers. Let those in labor unions and the unorganized march together from Union Square! Previously, in decades past, immigrants and workers, unionized and unorganized, marched from Union Square for workers’ rights. So it is an ode to history that we rally at Union Square. But then we will march to Wall Street, which we hold responsible for the exploitation and degradation of workers from New York to Karachi, from Dublin to Dubai, and Johannesburg to Mexico City. The neoliberal restructuring of the world economy is bringing down wages and causing unemployment, migration, and poverty all around the world. In that light, we wish to remind you that we have been a proud part of the New York May 1 Coalition for five years. From 2005, 2006 and to the present time we have organized with workers and immigrants in New York City to defend our rights. Brothers and sisters, stand with the workers, not the bosses. Unite together with immigrants and all workers. Do not turn your backs on our undocumented brothers and sisters in the working class. Join the May 1 Coalition at Union Square. Oppose the Schumer-Graham Bill. In unity there is strength! Dr. Muhammad ShafiquePresident Mr. Shahid Comrade Secretary General (917) 280-0840

E-mail: pakusaff@hotmail.com Stop Dividing Families End the Raids and Deportations CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR COMPATRIOTS WHO JOINED THE SIT-IN PROTEST AGAINST THE DRONE BOMBINGS OF OUR COUNTRY. At the same time we deeply thank the brave and conscious American peace activists who condemned the use of drones and carried a replica of the hated drones in the April 9th Anti-war rally and march in NYC, called by the United National Anti-war Committee (UNAC). YOU ARE THE REAL AMERICANS WHO WANT PEACE AND THE PAKISTANI COMMUNITY THANKS YOU! On April 9th, the United National Anti-war Committee (UNAC) brought together thousands of voices for peace, social and economic justice, in a unifying effort to stop the wars that both Republicans and Democrats in Congress continue funding and supporting. PAKUSAFF wants to especially congratulate the creative and conscious American peace activist who constructed with his own hands a replica of the U.S. military’s latest weapon of mass destruction and carried the symbolic gray Drone, the hated U.S. aircraft, a symbol of death that drops bombs on hundreds of innocent villagers, destroying the lives of innocent men, women and babies inn Pakistan and Yemen. Now President Obama, NATO and the western powers once again are cheating the United Nations Resolution on Libya, ordering the silent, deadly drone attacks against the people of Libya. Using drones to bomb a sovereign country is a violation of every book and law of the United Nations. All peace-loving people oppose these criminal attacks. The government of Pakistan and the highest command generals must respect the wishes of the people of Pakistan and demand that the U.S. stop these drone attacks. On behalf of the PAKUSAFF, we extend our full support and our congratulations to all our brave brothers and sisters who took part in the courageous action called by Mr Imran Khan, Leader Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, staging the protest sit-in in Peshawar, on the route to NATO supply lines to highlight the issue of Drone Attacks, Missing Persons, Dr. Aafia and other illegal detainees abroad and other security and sovereignty issues of the nation. We also salute our brave compatriots from many Pakistani organizations and groups for joining in this action and bringing mothers, brothers, sisters, daughters to denounce the violation of our country’s sovereignty and to highlight the plight of our countrymen and women, caused by the interference of the U.S. in our internal affairs. LAST PHARAOH AND VICTORY OF EGYPTIAN PEOPLE ON FEB. 11, 2011

From: pakusaff@hotmail.com To: peaceforhumanity@googlegroups.com Subject: {P 4 H - 26980} Murder is the Best Qualfication for a US Diplomat[add] Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2011 00:24:44 -0500 Comrade S. Secretary G. Ph: (+1) 917 280 0840 Blog: http://pakusaff.blogspot.com/ Free Kashmir No Indian Army PAKISTAN – USA FREEDOM FORUM 82-44 243 St., Bellerose, NY E-mail: pakusaff@hotmail.com Stop Dividing Families End the Raids and Deportations Last Pharaoh and Victory of Egyptian People on Feb. 11, 2011 Hundreds of people in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut including people of conscience assembled in front of the United Nations [47th Street and 1st Avenue from 1 to 4 pm] to celebrate the victory of the Egyptian people who peacefully forced the dictator Mubarak of 30 years to run away from the occupied public face of Egypt. After 18 days and nights the struggle of the Egyptian people who stood courageously for dignity and respect and declared like the Tunisian people they will not be ruled by the agent of the imperial Western powers [U.S], saw their demand that Mubarak step down on the same day that the Iranian people declared their nation free from the hated Shah of Iran thirty two years ago. February 11 is now a day that will shine like a star because two U.S. supported dictators fell into the dustbin of history. Pakistan USA Freedom Forum Secretary General Shahid Comrade shares the struggle of the Pakistani people against the military dictatorship supported by Washington, the Pentagon and western powers. Pakistan’s ex-dictator, General Pervez Musharraf kidnapped and sold the Pakastani sons and daughters [Dr. Afia Siddqui] and humans and sold to the Western powers [CIA]. He and his croonies [Shoukat Aziz] stole billions of dollars from poor Pakistanis and now living lavishly in London, played a similar subservient role as U.S. agent; and to this day is despised for the many crimes his dictatorial regime committed. Even now the Pakistani people suffer from his oppressive and pro-Washington policies. It was Musharraf who opened the country to the U.S. Black Water military contractors like Raymond Davis, now being held for killing two Pakistani citizens. In reality, Davis killed 4 Pakistani citizens, as Mrs. Shumaila, the sixth month long bride of one of the men shot by Davis committed suicide after learning of her husband’s death. The fourth innocent Pakistani ran over by the U.S. Conselate's four-wheeler who is coming to wisk murderer Ramon Davis. The Pakistani people are united in demanding that Davis be tried for his crime and not receive a phony ‘diplomatic’ immunity pushed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Pakistan’s foreign minister has resigned rather than bow down to the dictate of the U.S., trying to save one of their many agents sent into Pakistan. Comrade Shahid praised the struggle of the Egyptian people and hopes that the Egyptian people will demand that the Egyptian army will never use the guns against the people of Egypt and have learned a lesson from the struggle of people from all walks of life in Egyptian society (labor peasants, workers, intellectuals, writers, men, women, students, and different ethnic groups and religions). He hopes that the Egyptian people will demand an open investigation into the bank accounts of the army generals who shared in the booty given to Mubarak over the last 10 years. If the Western governments are true to their words about justice and equality, now is the chance to prove they are men and women of honor by opening the bank accounts of the Egyptian officials and generals to reveal how much money has been deposited outside of Egypt. That dirty, stolen money (billion$, billion$, billion$) in the bank accounts of all the top office bearers of Mubarak's party must be returned to the people of Egypt. That money will help solve the economic problems of Egypt and should be given to the people and families who were in the 30 years of Mumbarak's dictatorial regime supported by the US tortured, imprisoned, and sacrificed their lives, and should include those who were injured and killed during the last 18 days (Feb. 11, 2011). The rest of the money should be used to help end the extreme poverty and improve the educational system of Egypt. Pakistan General Secretary hopes that the new Egyptian caretaker government will be an independent government free of the dicatation of the Egyptian army generals who for 30 years ruled as puppets of the US Pentagon. The creditability of the new caretaker government depends directly on it lifting the emergency rules immediately and releasing all political prisoners from jails as the first steps towards fair and free elections. Long live the Egyptian, Tunisian, and Pakistani peoples struggle for dignity, respect and an end to foreign domination! Rally and celebration for the Egyptian revolution! In the name of the war on terror, like other names used before to attack the peace, NATO became a symbol of destruction, pain, injuries and abolishment of any human trust, especially in continents that never came under the jurisdiction of NATO, such as Asia and Africa. The Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement all over the world has many reasons to stand up against the system but NATO's war expansion and greed of Wall Street was the main force behind the movement. OWS joined the struggle of the immigrant and workers' rights May Day 2012 and made history. Peace-lovers must raise forceful voices for the peace of humanity. We cannot be fooled by slogans in which the western imperialist, invader powers say they represent national interests. At the time the NATO conference is held in Chicago on May 20, 2012, there is a good chance we can assure the world that people living in the United States and other European countries condemn the policies of their governments and stand in solidarity with the people and families who are affected[INSIDE OR ABROAD] by their illegal wars, drone attacks and interference in the matters of poor countries. Pakistan USA Freedom Forum is very proud of the struggle of Pakistanis for constitutional supremacy and international charter approved by the United Nations and supports the sovereignty of all countries regardless of their size and wealth. The Pakistani community can play and should play a big role as an immigrant and Muslim community standing for the highest value of the forefathers of the United States. These values are now under attack by the greedy bankers and Pentagon which are using fear to attack others. The Pakistan USA Freedom Forum calls on everyone to give a message to these war generals that the future of this earth depends on peace and harmony. So end all wars immediately, withdraw all foreign troops from Afghanistan, Iraq, Africa, Asia and spend money in war-effected zones on the people for their future. Drone attacks are a mockery of international charter and laws and should be ended immediately because they provide an argument for those hit by drones controlled by U.S. and European countries to retaliate. End the occupation of Palestine,Somalia and Kashmir. We ask President Zardari [who became president after his wife’s (Benazir’s ) murder, who returned to Pakistan after her self-exile, after negotiating (NRO- National Reconciliation Ordinance) with dictator general Musharef/Shoukat Aziz former citi bank employ(who is a runaway from the country and has cases pending against him) with the blessing of Condoleezza Rice and the British government. U.S.LISTEN TO THE FRESH VOICES OF THE OWS YOUTH BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

As one of the main representatives of the 1% in New York, he makes it clear that he has no regard for the opinions of the 99%. At the end of the Second World War the US military dropped two atom bombs on Asians in the name of peace and stability, but the US government has not always been able to count on the complicity of its citizens and the world. Millions mobilized across the globe to oppose aggressive wars in Vietnam and Iraq. Millions of Americans took to the streets to challenge social inequality during the Civil Rights movement. During the Great Depression, millions of workers, including many communists, built the industrial unions against the capitalist attacks. This generation of young people and students who have occupied Liberty Plaza in the name of social justice does so in the tradition of those who came before, and does so for the future generations who will come after. The Occupy Wall Street protesters began their demonstrations to expose the double standards of our society. A two-tiered legal system in the United States incarcerates millions of ordinary citizens for petty crimes, hundreds of thousands of immigrants for lacking documents, and refuses to prosecute the bankers responsible for the greatest fraud in history. The brave young demonstrators at Occupy Wall St. are criticized for supposedly “lacking” demands, but these criticisms are misplaced. When a child cries it is the responsibility of their parent to know why they cry. Young people are taking to the streets because our politicians, corporations, educators, and media have aided and abetted in the concentration of wealth in the hands of the 1% who now own 40 percent of the nation's wealth and receive over 20 percent of its annual income. The powerful have begun wars in foreign countries for their own profit, at the cost of $1,876.71 per soldier per day in Iraq and $3,287.67 in Afghanistan; with the total cost predicted to rise to $3.2 trillion in a study by Brown University. Regulators colluded with banks to hand them $700 billion in bailouts, and to prevent any prosecution for the systemic criminal conduct of Wall Street. Our leaders fail to see our children are educated, and while some schools force more than half their students to drop out, those students fortunate enough to go to college leave burdened by incredible debts that collectively mount to over $1 trillion. Besides waging two ongoing wars, the US overthrew the sovereign government of Libya. It is now planning similar moves against Syria and Iran, and is sending soldiers to as far as Uganda and Australia. While threatening Iran for its peaceful atomic policies it is supplying the atomic industry of India. It supported Pakistan dictatorship of Musharraf and Shoukat Aziz, the coup regime in Honduras. It supports the illegal occupations of Palestine and Kashmir and is carrying out illegal wars and drone attacks all over the world. The students and youth, teachers and nurses, union and community members, immigrants and retirees who assemble every day at Liberty Plaza and in squares across the USA and the World are protesting because they believe another world is possible; one where the needs of humans and the environment will have more significance than the profits of bankers and corporations. The power of the 1% over the 99% is codified into the very laws of our country, and creates a system of double standards where the wealthy are above the laws of everyone else. The Pakistan USA Freedom Forum stands in solidarity with the demonstrators at Liberty Plaza and with all the Occupations across the USA. We will stand with Occupy Wall St. in demanding a fair and justice society with dignity and respect for all. OWS stands for peace and love and is never afraid to take a stand against the double standard of US policies. They are bringing back respect and honor because they are taking up the real problems of jobs, unions, healthcare, and the environment. We propose to the Democratic and Republican Parties, in a meaningful step towards producing a government of the 99%, the two major parties agree not to contest more than 60 percent of the seats in the 2012 Congressional elections and leave the remaining seats to independent candidates, thereby allowing room for new people with new ideas to bring them forward. The Pakistan USA Freedom Forum respectfully encourages the Democratic and Republican National Committees to consider our proposal. The young demonstrators at Liberty Plaza represent the best of human intentions, welcoming the homeless, feeding all who come, and inviting everyone to participate as equals in their General Assemblies. We want to thank everyone who has supported this movement of the 99% by their attendance at protests or their donations, and encourage everyone to join us at Liberty Plaza. PUFF calls on every citizen of the world, and especially the youth of Pakistan, to join this movement of justice for humanity. KILLER SANDY

ANSWER ??? The Pakistan-USA Freedom Forum supports the families who lost their lives and homes and suffered great misery in the disastrous hurricane that hit the U.S., Cuba and the Caribbean, as well as the victims of the earthquake in Paraguay and the monsoon in Asia. The superpower was unable to cope with Hurricane Sandy that struck the East Coast’s largest and wealthiest region; it especially ignored the working class people who suffered the greatest devastation. The families in the Rockaways, Queens are still waiting for heat and electricity after 16 days. If the U.S. government can in a few days set up tent cities with generators to provide air conditioning for its troops in illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they could provide the generators here. People do not have enough gas to get to their jobs or travel outside their community, and had to wait in line up to 12 hours to buy a gallon of gas (petrol). New York billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg (who changed the laws of New York to run for a third term) made sure that Wall Street got everything it needed to open immediately while leaving poor and working people stranded without any assistance. And he showed more concern for the New York marathon, waiting until two days before the event to cancel it. New York City lost electrical power for days; there were no trains or buses, so people who needed to find shelter or get to hospitals had no transportation. The city never had a vision of using the army of 26,000 drivers from 13,000 yellow taxicabs who were ready to do anything to help the people of the city. But most drivers live miles outside of Manhattan and could not get through the closed bridges. The mayor did not open the bridges so they could come in to help people. This behavior is the worst disservice to the people. Hurricane Sandy showed that billions of dollars are needed to improve the city’ communication system, which is not up to the standards of the 21st century. City officials should be more open about the problems with the infrastructure so that people know the real reasons for the disaster. We still do not know why there is no proper gas (petrol) supply or what really caused the explosion at Con Edison’s 14th St. substation that left a large part of the city in the dark for days. The people of the U.S. gave their verdict in the Nov. 6 election that billions of dollars could not buy their vote for Mitt Romney, who openly represented the rich people (the 1%) and their system. When minorities, unions, immigrants, youth teachers, nurses, and artists stand together to struggle for their rights against the multi-trillion dollar companies the people will always win. In early 2012 labor unions in Wisconsin looked defeated when Gov. Scott Walker survived a recall election. But in the November 2012 election, Wisconsin’s Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay U.S. Senator. In Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren was elected Senator by campaigning against the war on women, for equal payment and for increased regulations on the Wall St. CEOs, who consider themselves above the law. We wish all these elected women well in their fight. The people voted for Obama because they considered him the “lesser of two evils.” The immigrant new citizens voted overwhelmingly for Obama. This shows that they stand for what they think is the best for the country, even though he deported 1.5 million of their sisters and brothers, more than any other president in history, dividing families and causing immense misery. Pakistan-USA Freedom Forum thanks all those organizations (such as the Islamic Council of North America, churches and synagogues) who have helped the victims. We thank all the individuals, including the foreign marathon runners who chose to stay and help. We thank the government of Venezuela, who sent food to the victims of Sandy in Haiti and Cuba. Finally we thank the brave New York activists, such as People’s Power and Workers World Party, who raised the necessary questions about the haphazard decisions and lack of concern of the city officials. We ask Obama’s new administration that someone has to stand up to become a statesman, to provide work, health care and education. It is estimated that Hurricane Sandy cost the region $50 billion. If this money had been spent to improve the infrastructure and protect the environment the damage would have been much less. We also demand an end to drone attacks and for the withdrawal of all troops from Afghanistan. This would save billions of dollars, and half of that money could be used to provide education and infrastructure for Afghanistan. A new hand of friendship should be extended to Cuba with the ending of the embargo. The UN occupation troops in Haiti that are doing the bidding of the US should be withdrawn. We ask that all political prisoners be released, as well as all prisoners jailed for non-violent offenses. This is an ultimatum to the two parties, which for over 120 years have been alternating in power, creating an electoral circus. The future belongs to the people. Either you change or you will fail. Finally, we ask that Mayor Bloomberg, who refused to cancel the Marathon earlier, should pay the expenses of the athletes out of his own pocket. Even though the taxi drivers could not drive because of the gas shortage, they had to pay hundreds of dollars for their lease fees to the owners and garages. We demand that they be given assistance by the Taxi & Limousine Commission and the Mayor’s Office. Dr. Muhammad Shafique President Mr. Shahid Comrade General Secretary (917) 280-0840

The people rallying included many young women and children calling for peace not war. The protestors then marched to the Capitol building. The protest was called by the International Action Center, Pakistan USA Freedom Forum, United National Anti War Coalition, ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition and the Syrian American Forum. Secretary General of Pakistan USA Freedom Forum (Pakusaff) Mr. Shahid Comrade would like to thank everyone who came to Washington on September 9th to show their support – especially the Syrians. He also made clear to the press that we are only against the interference of any power or super power USA whose actions will disrupt the efforts in Syria and the region to bring peace in the WORLD. We also oppose the hypocrisy of Washington, which blames Iran for every ill in the Middle East, when it is USA that has used chemical weapons against the Iranians and gave them to Saddam Hussein of Iraq in the 1980's. Pakusaff is also appealing to the other two 'superpowers' – Russia and China – who have the kind of economic and political weight in the international arena to "draw a red line" against any military attack on the Syrian people. A hard and bitter lesson was learned by both countries when they abstained in the Security Council on the issue of Libya and saw the cruel nature of both NATO and the United States, which used the cover of "humanitarian right to protect" to bomb the Libyan society and make it fall into the hands of uncontrollable and chaotic warlords, as the suffering goes on. Thanks to the U.S., the old colonial powers (Italy, Britain and France) got the contracts for the Libyan peoples' oil and they are sharing in the booty while every social ill is visited upon the Libyan people. We expect the leaders of these other two Big Powers not to remain silent in the face of this new U.S. Western military threat. Furthermore, any kind of occupation (Kashmir by India, Palestine by Israel, Somalia, Haiti) will not be tolerated. All peace-loving countries and peoples must stand up now to stop Washington from carrying out yet another war and intervention. The Pakusaff Secretary General demanded that all countries, including the United States government, declare their secret chemical weapons and that the Western powers show the UN and the public their bills of sale for chemical weapons to anywhere. We all waited patiently for President Obama's Speech to the Nation on September 10, 2013 and it was our prayer and hope that he would heed the calls of the people and declare that the USA will not attack Syria, but our hearts were disappointed once again. President Obama did not say the USA would not attack Syria; instead he repeated the same old rhetoric of believing that the US is still the world's policeman and that if things don't go the way that satisfies the USA, then Syria is still under the guns of America. No, Mr. Obama, we the people declare that we will not accept another war, whether or not it is approved by the US Congress. We do not want the first black president to go against more than 70% of citizens who do not want any war. War is always a dirty game. The US has no right to attack a country that has not attacked us. That is the ONLY reason for a war – to defend oneself from an outside aggressor, and Syria is not threatening the United States. Pakistan USA Freedom Forum cannot ignore the pages from history books, which tell us that the USA is the only country that used the atom bomb against human beings in 1945 on Japan, that used napalm bombs against Vietnamese civilians, that deceived the world when late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein used chemical gas against Kurds during the Iran-Iraq war in 1988, of the CIA’s involvement in killing foreign head of states, of the USA and allies playing a direct or indirect role to overthrowing elected governments, not accepting people’s voting majority in Algeria, Chile, Cuba, Grenada, Nicaragua, Haiti, Iran, Honduras, Congo, Pakistan, Iraq, Libya, Egypt, and now Syria. At home we are still fighting for medical aid for all, an equal salary for men and woman. The US has the largest number of people in jail. Wall Street CEOs are untouchable by any court, even though their blunders put the country on its knees. There only control is the Federal Reserve Board, which consist of old friends who know each other for the last 30 years. President Obama, we want to believe you when you talk about kids, women, family and the future, but it is very difficult when you deported 400,000 hard-working people in one year, beating all records. Millions of families have been separated over the last decades. Signing the National Defense Authorization Act is the worst moment for any law scholar, spying on all people and using intelligence to cover this up. You do not need to help those who always try to create war so they can introduced new kinds of weapons (F-22s, precision rockets to attack chemical buildings or facilities) and demand billions of dollars. Pakusaff is asking all diplomats with a conscience to find a resolution so that the Syrian people can talk and solve the conflict with the help of US peace lovers. More than a third of the population have become refugees and 100,000 have died in the last two years. In the last almost seven decades we are failed to solved the Palestinian question and even in Kashmir question we did not want to get involved when two Asian countries that now have the atom bomb, India Pakistan, fought three wars and Pakistan lost East Pakistan when the Indian army crossed Pakistan’s international border. Pakusaff believes that the coming UN General Assembly session on September 25, 2013 is the best moment to show the world that we stand for peace. We also urge the President to meet with Iran's new president, Mr. Hassan Rohani and begin a real dialogue and stop threats against Iran and Syria. It would be wonderful if an international body of peace activists could ask the two parties to sit down with those who love peace. Dr. Aafia was kidnapped from Pakistan with her 3 small children in 2003 and reappeared in the U.S. controlled Bagram Air Force base in Afghanistan. While being interrogated by U.S. agents, she was shot and seriously wounded in the abdomen, and was then again kidnapped and put on trial for allegedly shooting at two of the U.S. agents, neither of whom was wounded. She was convicted solely on the testimony of military and other U.S. personnel; there was no forensic evidence against her, no fingerprints on the gun, no powder burns on her hands and no bullets produced. While Dr. Aafia has been portrayed in the U.S. press as a “terror mom,” in Pakistan she is treated as the daughter of the Pakistani people, and the government was forced to put up $2 million for her defense. In particular, we feel that it is very important that the case was not tried in open court. All visitors had to provide their identification, which was written down, and they had to sign in before they were granted admission to the court, or even to the overflow rooms. To our knowledge, this is unprecedented in trials in the U.S. It undermines the public’s belief in the fair trials and is only for purposes of intimidation, wince all visitors to the court building have already passed through security scans. It is also very important now when other trials of people accused of terrorism are coming before the courts, and this treatment of visitors to Dr. Aafia’s trial can be used as precedent. Pakistan USA Freedom Forum, as an organization of Muslim immigrants in this country, is proud to be taking a stand on this issue that is important to the defense of Constitutional rights, freedom of speech and assembly and open courts. This country has a proud tradition of fighters for workers, civil and human rights, including Joe Hill (labor leader framed and executed in Utah in 1916), Rosa Parks (Afro-American woman who initiated the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 when she refused to give her seat on a bus to a white man), Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, William Kunstler (famed civil rights lawyer), Lynne Stewart (lawyer currently serving time in prison for aggressive defense of her client, Sheikh Rahman), and many others. We hope you will take up the case for open courts in the U.S. We will be glad to give any assistance we can. Sincerely, Shahid Comrade Dr. Muhammad Shafique President Mr. Shahid Comrade General Secretary (917) 280-0840 The above letter was sent to well-known lawyers in New York City. Many of the fighters that we feel proud to associate ourselves with were known to have defended what were considered unpopular causes at their time. Comrade S. Secretary G.
