The responsibility of US citizens in 2008

Pakistani Americans and the people of this great nation admire all people of the world for their struggle for freedom and progress. US/NATO machinations to make "independent" regions of sovereign nations – in Kosovo, Tibet, Armenia – are known throughout the world as violations of UN resolutions protecting territorial integrity. These efforts are nothing more than attempts to divide and conquer nations in a new colonial project aimed at subjugating the people of the world under military and neoliberal control. We believe that the government of the U.S. should work in the interests of people to improve their lives, to live in peace, and to relieve hardship and suffering.
Instead, The Pentagon currently owns or rents 702 overseas bases in about 130 countries and another 6,000 bases in the U.S. and its territories. In ten years the U.S. has squandered over $5.12 trillion, half of our tax dollars, for military spending. This money could have gone to Katrina victims, schools or health care. Instead, it is advancing U.S. corporate interests, threatening world peace, killing thousands and supporting corrupt dictators. PAKUSAFF stands opposed to these actions. Journalists, writers, judges, and government leaders have lied about promoting "democracy" and covered up violations of human rights. We urge them to stop taking part in the great machinery perpetrating this waste and plunder and tell the truth about U.S. policy. The government must change its policies to restore respect for the United States in the world, especially in the Muslim world. PAKUSAFF, in support of common working people here and abroad, resolves:

1. The United States should withdraw its armed forces from Iraq and Afghanistan as soon as possible.
2. The news media should be fair and maintain its integrity. They should refrain from biased portrayals and stories, especially when reporting on Islamic cmmunity. Freedom of religion is a cornerstone of US civil rights, and the non-stop Islam bashing is unconstitutional and divisive.
3. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security must end their terrifying raids on people in their homes and workplaces. They violate rights and human decency, separate mothers from children, and husbands from wives. ICE must legalize the status of all immigrants, with or without documents. They must end the excessive charges for visas and immigration documents that punish poor immigrants who want to comply with regulations. The back log of cases of people seeking citizenship or other documents must be rectified as soon as possible.
4. The State Department must change their discriminatory practices towards students, artists and others from Muslim countries when issuing visas.
5. The government must develop a sound economic policy to provide relief to common people, who face rising prices, inadequate health care, a housing crisis, and growing unemployment.
8. The government should provide relief to the millions of people facing foreclosure and homelessness. They must establish clear guidelines against predatory banking practices and punish the corrupt money lenders who exploited unsophisticated lenders.
9. The U.S. must end its efforts to destabilize to the African continent. They must end the threat inherent in the formation of the AFRICOM military command, which only serves to advance corporate interests in a grab for Africa's natural resources. They must provide aid to African countries on the basis of the people’s needs, not on alliances with their rulers.
10. The U.S. must keep its hands off Latin America. They must stop using their allies in the Colombian government to attack Ecuador, and threaten Venezuela and Bolivia. The illegal blockade of Cuba must be ended.
11. The U.S. must stop providing aid to the dictators Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan. All aid should be based on the of people needs, not to benefit US-allied dictators and the class they represent.
12. The U.S. policy to reward India by providing them with nuclear fuel must be stopped to prevent proliferation of atomic weapons in the world.
13. The U.S. must establish genuine environmental policies and ratify internationally approved accords to allay environmental degradation and global warming.

This resolution was passed March 17, 2008, in Pakiza restaurant, Brooklyn, NY
